Quick answer: for the best-reviewed 2026 co-op horror indie, play Shift At Midnight. For a bigger group of up to six, try Invokyr.

Co-op horror is crowded. Lethal Company, R.E.P.O. and Content Warning set the bar, and every new release gets compared to them on day one. Most of the newcomers don’t survive that comparison.

A handful did. We looked at the year’s indie co-op horror releases on Steam and kept the ones with at least 100 reviews, then ranked them by the percentage of positive reviews. We’re honest about what’s missing, too: there are plenty of 2026 co-op horror games, but few have enough reviews to rank fairly yet.

How We Ranked Them

  • 2026 releases: every game launched on Steam this year, including Early Access.
  • Indie: made by an independent developer or small studio, without a major publisher.
  • Reviews: minimum 100 Steam reviews. Ranked by positive %, with review count as the tie-breaker.
  • Scare level: our own rating from 1 (mild) to 5 (very scary), not a Steam number.

Released: July 22, 2026  |  Steam reviews: Very Positive, 94% of about 5,200  |  Price: $9.99  |  Players: up to 3  |  Scare level: 3/5

Shift At Midnight is an online co-op detective horror game for up to three players. You work across randomly generated shifts, investigating your customers, because some of them are only pretending to be human.

It was made by a solo developer, Bun Muen, and it went viral after big streamers played the demo. Players compare it to Five Nights at Freddy’s and Papers, Please, which is a fair description. It plays solo too, and a free multiplayer demo is available. A free update with a finished Endless Mode is planned for Q4 2026. Content note: plenty of gore and blood.

2. Invokyr: A Cursed Board Game for Six

Released: October 8, 2026 (Early Access)  |  Steam reviews: Very Positive, 93% of about 1,300  |  Price: $12.99  |  Players: up to 6  |  Scare level: 3/5

Invokyr is a co-op survival horror game about a cursed board game. You roll the dice, survive the horrors that are summoned, and try to beat the Gamemaster to win your freedom.

It’s the newest game on the list and the one with the freshest idea. The store page says you can work together or leave someone behind, which is exactly the kind of choice that ruins friendships. It’s in Early Access, so expect changes, and the review pool is still small.

3. YAPYAP: Wizard Minions and Wrecked Towers

Released: February 3, 2026  |  Steam reviews: Very Positive, 83% of about 4,000  |  Price: $9.99  |  Players: up to 6  |  Scare level: 2/5

YAPYAP is a magic-themed co-op horror game where you and up to five friends are minions summoned by a wizard to break into their rival’s towers to cause mayhem. You cast spells with your own voice and avoid the magical beasts that guard each tower.

It sold 500,000 copies in its first week, which makes it the biggest hit on this list, and it’s the funniest and least scary. A quick honesty note: some reviewers say the fun wears off after a couple of hours, and recent reviews have slipped into Mixed territory, so it’s best at a sale price.

Released: October 16, 2026  |  Steam reviews: Mostly Positive, 71% of about 140  |  Price: $7.99  |  Players: up to 6  |  Scare level: 2/5

In Stream Train, up to six players livestream their trip down an abandoned railroad. You keep your audience entertained by filming creatures, doing dangerous stunts and pranking your friends, and you use chatter donations to buy fuel and gear.

It’s from Half Past Yellow, a small Copenhagen studio, and it finishes last because its score is lowest and its review pool is the smallest. It’s still a fresh idea for a group that loves comedy more than scares. It launched with a 35% discount, so check the current price on the store page.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best co-op horror indie game on Steam in 2026?

By Steam review score among this year’s releases, it’s Shift At Midnight at 94% positive across about 5,200 reviews. Invokyr follows at 93%.

Why are there only four games?

We only included indie co-op horror games released in 2026 with at least 100 Steam reviews. Many newer releases don’t have enough reviews to rank fairly yet.

Is REANIMAL on this list?

No. REANIMAL launched on February 13, 2026, with co-op for two players, but it’s published by THQ Nordic, so we didn’t count it as an indie. Its Steam score is about 82% for English reviews.

What about Rat Game?

Rat Game is an asymmetrical horror comedy for up to eight players that launched on October 30, 2026. It’s at 93% positive, but it has only about 50 reviews, so it’s too new to rank.

How did you rank these games?

By the percentage of positive Steam reviews, with the number of reviews breaking any ties. Scare level is our own rating.

Final Thoughts

2026 hasn’t produced another Lethal Company yet, but it has produced a few good new ways to scream with friends. If you only try one, make it Shift At Midnight. If your group is bigger than three, try Invokyr.

Which of these are you starting with? Tell us in the comments, and if you think a great 2026 co-op horror indie deserves a spot, we’d like to hear about it.
